The 3-player variant is the worst. It has you play the 4-player game, and one of the players has to keep his cards and his dice separate as if he is two different players. Anyway, if you're inclined to give it a shot as a 4-player game, I encourage you! I've heard "there are better 4-player games out there" but I honestly haven't found any.
